My First Stroke Patient

“COVID-19, alone, intubated.

Young Black Female,

BLM protests outside.

Significant anemia. Blood ordered post-procedure.

I check on her. Sedation wearing off.

I explain.

She panics.

“I never want blood!” she writes.

“Why?”

“Religious—Spiritual”

I panic.

RN, PRBC bag in hand.

“No blood,” I say.

I alert MD.

On rounds—

“Thank you, Dara,” she writes.”
